Unsure how to comment on your print strikeoff?

5 step guide to comments that will get your next strikeoff back on track

Have you ever gotten a print strikeoff and been disappointed?  Maybe the color was off, maybe it was fuzzy, maybe it was even missing an element.

Or maybe you were unsure how to tell you factory what was wrong with the strikeoff.

Here’s an easy 5 step guide to comments that will get your next strikeoff back on track.

How to comment on a print strikeoff:

1.     Compare the layout to the layout of your artwork and check for any differences

2.     Check for common problems, like the registration is off, something is missing, it’s overall looking fuzzy

3.     Compare the colors to your artwork and make sure they match

4.     Take your findings and approve, or reject and comment on the strikeoff in your print development card or tracking sheet

5.     Send your comments to your factory

Pro tip:  If you’re not sure how to describe the problem, or if you’re concerned the factory won’t understand what you need, take a picture.  I always include both a print copy of the artwork that was sent to the factory and the strikeoff itself in the photo.  You can then mark it up with your comments in Adobe Illustrator, or, my preference, use sticky notes on the strikeoff and artwork and use words and arrows to describe the problem.  Then take a picture for your factory to see.

Keep all your comments in one place where you and the factory can keep track of where you are in the process.

I do this in a spreadsheet called a development card, using one per print for more complicated prints, or if your prints are pretty simple, in one tracking sheet for all prints.

Not sure how to create a development card, or making Excel charts not your thing?  Use mine.
