Technical Design Package
Let’s build a detailed tech pack for your design.
Need a tech pack to start production or switch factories?
Having trouble keeping your designs consistent from order to order?
Need a better way to track your design as it moves toward production?
Want to add some structure to this process?
What if you had a detailed tech pack with all the information your factory needed to make your garment correctly, no matter where it was produced?
How would your life be easier if you had a simple way to track your designs as they moved toward production?
Who is this for?
The Technical Design Package is for brands who want a tech pack to tell their factory exactly how to make their design, and want to manage the proto review process on their own.
You’ll get:
A full tech pack with:
Detailed sketches with clear instruction so there’s no guessing
The “shopping list” (AKA Bill of Material) for the design with all fabrics and trims so nothing is missed
Measurements for all sizes so your fit is clear and stays consistent
Proto review page to track notes for each proto
Change log to track all changes and comments from design into production
This gives you:
Everything your factory needs to make your design the way you want
A paper trail of all changes and comments
Credibility with your factory
The freedom to more easily move factories
More time to focus on the bigger picture
What’s included:
Cover Page
Your cover page is a one stop shop for you and your factory to see all the basics of your design.
It includes a change log where you can track all changes as you move toward production. It’s the easiest way to stay organized and never find yourself searching through emails to see what you told your manufacturer last.
Bill of Materials (BOM)
The BOM is the shopping list for your design. It tells the factory every single component that goes into your design, how many you need, and what color it should be.
This means:
Your manufacturer can accurately price your design
You can easily counter source and compare prices at different manufacturers
Your design will be consistent from season to season because all this info is in one place
Flat Sketches
Detailed flat sketches tell your factory exactly how to make your garment.
This Means:
There’s nothing your factory will need to guess
Your garment will come in how you want it, and will be the same the next time you (or your customer) order it
Grated Spec (Measurements page)
The graded spec includes all the fit info your factory needs to make your garment.
This means:
You’ll have the freedom to more easily move factories
Reduced returns because your sizing will stay consistent from order to order and your customer will never be surprised with a change in fit
You control every detail of your design
Measurement Guide
The Measurement Guide shows your factory how you’re measuring the garment, and makes sure you’re on the same page.
Your clothing manufacturer will use this guide to create the pattern for your design.
Prototype Review Page
The Proto Review Page is a place for you to track your prototype review comments and communicate them to your factory.
This means;
All your comments are in one easy place for you and your factory to see
No more digging through emails or trying to remember phone conversations to figure out what you did or didn’t approve
Pricing
Pricing is between 1799-2599 per style depending on product type. Let’s chat about what you’re making and I can send a detailed proposal specific to your product.
Let’s discuss your goals and see if my services would be a good fit for your business
The 20 minute call is free and there is no obligation to work together. We’ll get to know each other and talk about your brand and goals. At the end of the call if we feel we would be a good fit to work together I’ll send over a detailed proposal with timeframe and pricing info. Once you approve the proposal, I receive 50% payment up front and get started on your tech pack.
"Amy has been great to work with! As Bad Birdie started to scale, it got harder to track all our new products. Working with Amy helped us add structure to our process. She also got us up to speed on tech packs; before we started working together proto review calls with the factory would take hours. I would 100% recommend her."
— Jason Richardson, CEO, Bad Birdie
"I was initially hesitant about the cost sustainability of your services, but they were worth every penny and I would recommend working with you!
We have worked with other freelancers but their tech packs were missing many components to proceed, such as precise sizing and BOM details.
You have been professional, with exceptional quality of work, and precise follow through. My favorite part of working together has been your attention to detail, knowledge of industry, and experience in the industry. "
— Hannah Han, Cofounder, Johan Golf Apparel
“Amy jumped in to help us with our Spring 2021 tech packs when we were in a crunch. Everything she did for us was executed really really well and very timely.”
— Randy Kleiner, Director of Product, TOPO Designs
“Amy was great to work with. On the design side, she has a great sense of color and style with an eye for detail and trend. On the technical side, she has an excellent attention to detail and wonderful follow through. I would highly recommend her to anyone.”
— Julie Middendorf, Senior Designer of Wovens, Tommy Bahama
“The work Amy’s done for us with our tech packs, proto review, and factory communication has been very helpful. Our factory has very few questions and she’s saved us tons of time."
— Sam Outerbridge, Cofounder, Coral Coast Clothing
“I would absolutely recommend working with you. The quality of the work to date and your attention to detail has been very impressive. There is a very small margin for error with the timeline we are working under and I'm comfortable in hitting our deadlines because of the detailed process we are going through.“
— William Morris, Founder, Loop Active
“Amy helped us create more factory-friendly tech packs. She is very professional and responsive, with lots of good conversations and check ins.”
— John Clifford, Creative Director / Operating Partner, Jetty
Common questions:
What do I need to start?
You’ll need a finalized design, including trims and any prints and patterns, size range, and reference sample of how you’d like your garment to fit.
I don’t know anything about sizing. Is this something you can help with?
Yes. All you need is a sample that you like the fit of and I take it from there. Your fit is based on your sample with any changes you’d like to make, and then I grade it up into the larger sizes, and down into the smaller sizes for you.
Does this package include trim development?
Yes, this package includes trim development when needed. We can discuss to see what the best route is for you.
I already have a tech pack I made with AI. It’s almost ready to go. Can you just check it and refine it for me?
Nope. Or at least, I haven’t come across a workable AI tech pack yet. If you’d like you can send me what you have and I can let you know, but in 100% of cases so far, it would be much faster for me to create a new tech pack from scratch than it would be for me to update a tech pack made with AI.
Does this package include design?
The Technical Design Package does not include design. Please see the Golf Print Design or Menswear Design Package for more information on design.
I’m concerned about working with a remote freelancer.
You want to make sure you’re working with someone who is easy to reach and can mange your project remotely.
Video calls are a great way bridge the distance. Bring your coffee. It’ll be just like we’re in the room together.
In my experience factories are happy to send two sets of protos, swatch cards, etc., so my clients and I each have a set and are looking at the same thing at the same time.
An advantage of working with a remote freelancer? Being open to a remote freelancer expands the talent pool you have access to, especially if you don’t live in a fashion hub.
The last freelancer I hired dropped the ball. How do I know you’re different?
Check out my Testimonials to hear what it’s like to work with me from some of my clients. I’m a habitual overachiever. You won’t be disappointed.
It takes too much time to onboard a freelancer.
You’re busy and don’t have time to do a lot of hand-holding. I’m conscious of my client’s time. I don’t like unnecessary meetings and emails and I’m sure you don’t either. Working with me saves my client’s time because their factory has everything they need to make their design up front. They can focus on the bigger picture of growing their business.
Why do I need a tech pack if my factory has been making my product without one?
If you’re happy with the way your design is made, tech packs are the best way to lock it in and make sure nothing changes later on. If your factory made your design without a tech pack, it’s not too late to create one.
If you’re counter sourcing, handing a new factory your tech pack is the best way for them to price out and create your first proto. Your tech pack will have detailed sketches, and up to 50 points of measure. With all that information, there’s nothing the factory needs to guess.
A tech pack makes sure you and your factory are aligned on expectations, and it’s the best way to track all your changes and comments.
If you’re not sure how to track your design as you move toward production, if the way you’re working now feels messy and not scalable, the organization and paper trail that a tech pack gives you will change your life.
Why can’t I send my design to a factory without a tech pack?
Some factories will work with you without a tech pack. Here’s why you should send one anyway:
Without a tech pack there’s no guarantee your design will stay consistent from season to season, or order to order, because the notes to the factory are scattered throughout emails or said over phone calls, not in one central location.
Without detailed sketches and measurements, the factory has to make guesses when they’re making your design, and you might not be happy with what they decide.
There is no central document to track notes for your protos, so you find yourself digging through emails to remember what you told the factory last.
If you move to a new factory, you may never get your sizing exactly how it was because your old factory may not want to give you their measurements.
Without a tech pack you’re not in total control of your design.
When you start with a tech pack, you direct all the details up front and own that information. You’ll never have to sneakily ask your factory for your grading, hoping they don’t realize you’re talking to other manufacturers and crossing your fingers they’ll give it to you.
Can I edit the tech pack myself?
Yes. I provide all files used to make the tech pack so that you can edit it yourself. This includes the final tech pack in Excel, as well as all Adobe Illustrator files where I made the sketches. I know some freelancers and agencies who do not provide the editable files. This puts you in a position where you’re either stuck with that agency or freelancer, or you need to hire someone to recreate everything for you. I don’t do that. All the files I create for you are yours.
What’s your refund policy?
Because tech packs are a digital good and unreturnable, all sales are final. If you are unhappy for any reason please contact me and I’ll do my best to make it right.
Why work with me?
My years of industry experience mean your factory will have minimal, if any, questions and be able to produce your garment faster.
My clients spend less time explaining their design to their factories and can get their prototypes and counter source faster.
My clients say I’m professional and reliable. Check out the Testimonials page to see for yourself.
You’ll know all pricing information up front.
